Loose tubes are made of high modulus plastic and filled with water blocking compound. Loose tubes (and filler rod) are stranded around the metallic central strength member to form a compact and circular cable core, and the gap in the cable core is filled with water blocking compound. For some sizes of optical cable, the central strength member is covered with a layer of cushion. Polyethylene sheath is extruded after longitudinal wrapping of steel tape to enhance the mechanical characteristics of the cable .
